There’s something so thrilling about travelling, and particularly so when you go out there alone. For myself, it was a last minute and half-hearted decision to apply for the Malaysia Group Internship program. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, but before I knew it, I had become swept up in this pace that I didn’t mind one bit.
In a blink of an eye, I was waking up to the sight of a city that starts at the crack of dawn, slipping into a smart dress paired with conservative heels and heading off to intern in a field I had absolutely no academic background in. Yes, it was a challenge, but it was one that I took great pride in overcoming alongside some of the greatest people I have met in my life thus far. Nothing could have made my trip over there any greater than the friendships I have built while a thousand leagues away from home. Through all that we have struggled with, to all we have rejoiced in, I couldn’t have wished for a better crowd than that I was blessed with.
We spent our days hard at work, learning the technicalities of the job and seeing projects through with utmost dedication. We’d return home to each other, and there’s just something about being welcomed back and having our day asked about that really makes you miss it once it stops.
Like anything, it ended. There were no more “good morning’s” or “good night’s” from your beloved roomie. There were no more meals had at that one particular street restaurant you were regulars at. There were no more life-filled nights out followed by happy stumbling to the nearest Maccas. That version of you that was ever so free and independent was back on a plane heading straight home, and what remains is all happy memories and a mutual feeling that can only be understood with having experienced the same.
